Built in 1744, this was the home of John Wister, a popular Philadelphia merchant, and wine importer. During the battle of Germantown, it was then occupied by the British Army’s James Agnew. WebGrumblethorpe, however, is not only known for its gruesome memento mori. This historic house has exhibits ranging from a colonel kitchen to a ledger marking the rent paid by a newly arrived Bostonian lad called Ben Franklin. It also has the writing desk where Wistar’s descendant Owen Wister wrote The Virginian.
